    QUALIFICATION DESCRIPTION

    Advance your welding portfolio and gain the practical skills required to apply for your Welding Certificate – to qualify, you must also complete the theory certification as prescribed by Australian Standards (AS) 1796 – 2001. Certification is mandatory for welders engaged in welding activities involved in the manufacture of pressure equipment such as boilers, pressure vessels and associated piping, as defined in AS / New Zealand Standards 1200.

    Important Information

    To apply for a WTIA Welding Ticket, students need to complete MEM05026C Apply Welding Principles (Theory), PLUS the relevant practical unit for the ticket they are undertaking. Please note, the price quoted is per ticket and does not include MEM05026C – Apply Welding Principles (Theory Unit).

    AS 1796 Welders/ Welding Certification 1-9

    The possession of a welder’s certificate indicates that the holder has a sound knowledge of the theory of safe welding and has demonstrated the ability required to make welds using the appropriate process.

    Titles and Types of Certification

    Certificate No. 1—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides).

    Certificate No. 1E—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 2—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel pipe (single vee weld from one side only).

    Certificate No. 3—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides).

    Certificate No. 3E—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 4—Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel pipe (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 5—Gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) root run and manual metal-arc

    welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel pipe (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 6—Gas welding (GW) (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 7—Gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) (single vee welded from one side only).

    Certificate No. 8F—Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) of plate and pipe.

    Certificate No. 8G—Gas metal-arc welding (GMAW), of plate and pipe.

    Certificate No. 9—Automatic welding.

    Certificate No. 10—Welding supervisor.

    NOTE: The suffix ‘E’ indicates that a candidate elected to make a full penetration single sided but weld on plate.

    Direct entry trades include:

    • Boilermaker
    • Sheetmetal

    Persons who have completed the correlating advanced stream:

    • MEM05016C Perform advanced welding using manual metal arc welding process
    • MEM05018C Perform advanced welding using gas metal arc welding process
    • MEM05020C Perform advanced welding using gas tungsten arc welding process
    • MEM05048B Perform advanced welding using flux core arc welding process.

    There are a number of different welding certificates and the student must enroll into the appropriate unit that aligns to the certificate type that they wish to obtain. The course will be assessed by an authorised assessor on the last day of the course as described by AS1796 – 2001.

    Course Outcome

    On successful completion of this course you receive a Statement of Attainment. The units in this course form part of MEM40105 – Certificate IV in Engineering.

    Course Requirements

    Personal protective equipment:

    • safety glasses – students must wear these at all times in the workshop or any eye hazard area as specified by the teacher
    • protective footwear – covered uppers, capped toe’s and non-slip shoes to AS2210
    • hand protection – long leather welding gloves to AS2161
    • hair protection – long hair (i.e. hair below collar length) must be restrained (hat, headband, or hair tie) within the workshop environment
    • clothing – overalls or long cotton trousers and a long sleeved cotton drill shirt are required to be worn at all times when undertaking practical training
    • Student USI number

    Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry to practical classes.

    Course duration : Full time/ Part time program

    Students can start & complete course in their suitable time. Booking/ Enrolment with USI is essential prior start the course.

    Note- No more than 40 hours including practical. 5-10 Hours Individual study through learner guide, video, practical, work, Books etc

    Subject to welding bay arability. Condition apply

    Part time: 10 weeks / 1 night for 3.5 hours

    Part time: Every day/ night for 10 Days 3.5 hours/ day

    Full time: Monday to Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm
