Choosing the right welding helmet can be difficult and with so many options, choice is not a problem. So get a helmet that suits
you and has the features that match your needs.
Keep this in mind when making your selection:
- Protection
- You view of the arc
- Arc detection
- Quality
-Comfort
Does the helmet give you full protection and cover your head correctly?
Viewing area is critical, usually the more expensive the helmet the better your viewing area.
Auto Darkening is rated on sensitivity, the more sensitive the more reliable, look for a lens rated 1A.
Respiratory Protection can often be overlooked, but make sure you consider a helmet that meets your requirements now and ongoing.
Make sure you get a helmet with replaceable batteries, otherwise you will need to replace your helmet when the batteries die,
even solar helmets have batteries.
On average batteries last around 2000 hours.
Make sure the helmet is comfortable, try it on and set it up. Then imagine wearing this for hours at a time, it has to be comfortable.
This course is designed for those who have an existing nationally recognised Statement of Attainment,
and are currently working in the industry and want to renew their certificate.

Mig Welder Maintenance
Your mig welder is one of the most important and overlooked machines in the workshop,
regular maintenance is needed to keep it operating correctly.
First unplug the unit prior to doing any maintenance
Blow out the welder feeder section with compressed air, ensuring dust
and dirt are removed, this ensures debris is not passed into the liner.
Blow out liner from the contact tip end of the gun, this will help
stop the grime build up that can hinder the wire travel.
Check contact tip, nozzle and diffuser are kept clean, using
nozzle dip can help stop the splatter sticking.
Check the diffuser is not clogged, and use a wire brush to clean the area and remove splatter.
Replace tips as needed to ensure high quality weld and match the tip to the wire size.
Thoroughly check the gun switch and handle for correct operation and no cracks are found.
Check gas is flowing correctly and is secured, poor gas feed will impact your welds.
Weld quality is the first impacted to a poorly serviced welder, so ensure you maintain your welder at least once a week.
