This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to prepare and produce welds to code standards using FLUX CORE, STICK, MIG and TIG and applies to the production of butt and fillet welds in the positions on a range of materials.

Welds produced to the standard of this unit would typically conform to AS 1210-2010 Pressure vessels, AS 4041-2006 (R2016) Pressure piping, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) IX, or equivalent. This unit, in conjunction with unit MEM05026 Apply welding principles, may satisfy the requirements of AS 1796-2006 (R2016) Certification of welders and welding supervisors.

To apply for a Welding Ticket, students need to complete MEM05026C Apply Welding Principles (Theory), PLUS the relevant practical unit for the ticket they are undertaking.

  • MEM05046 Ticket 1 & 1E / 3 & 3E Plate and Pipe MMAW STICK
  • MEM05045 Ticket 2 / 4 / 5 Pipe MMAW STICK
  • MEM05044 Ticket 5 / 7 Pipe GTAW TIG
  • MEM05042 Ticket 8F Plate and Pipe FCAW FLUX CORE
  • MEM05043 Ticket 8G Plate and Pipe GMAW MIG
AS 1796 Welders/ Welding Certification 1-9
The possession of a welders competecy of units indicates that the holder has a sound knowledge of the theory of safe welding and has demonstrated the ability required to make welds using the appropriate process.

Titles and Types of Certification

Certificate No. 1: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides).

Certificate No. 1E: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel plate and carbon steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 2: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds in carbon steel pipe (single vee weld from one side only).

Certificate No. 3: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides).

Certificate No. 3E: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel plate and alloy steel pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 4: Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel pipe (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 5: Gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) root run and manual metal-arc welding (MMAW) of welds using hydrogen-controlled electrodes in alloy steel pipe (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 6: Gas welding (GW) (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 7: Gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) (single vee welded from one side only).

Certificate No. 8F: Flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) of plate and pipe.

Certificate No. 8G: Gas metal-arc welding (GMAW), of plate and pipe.

Certificate No. 9: Automatic welding.

Certificate No. 10: Welding supervisor. NOTE: The suffix indicates that a candidate elected to make a full penetration single sided but weld on plate.

Why do I need a competency of unit of welding tickets?
If you dont have a competency of unit your resume will unlikely be shortlisted, it doesnt matter how good you weld, all recruiters have a filter on their system. If you are not ticking all the boxes while apply for the job the system will drop off your resume from shortlisting.

Example XYZ company looking for experience pipe welder for Oil & Gas industry. The company is using Tig welding for root & hot pass and Stick welding for filling & capping. The company recruiter requirement is a competency in MEM05044 Gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW / TIG welding / Ticket 7) & Manual metal-arc welding (MMAW / Stick welding / Ticket4). If you dont have competecncy in those units the system will drop off your resume from shortlisting. Special class welders always gets better pay then Boilermakers & Pipe fitters.
